Educational Value of Kids Kitchen Playsets
Kitchen playsets are a mainstay in most daycares and pre-schools because they keep children entertained while
developing their social skills. While a toddler or child is playing with other children, they learn how to get
along with others, how to work out problems between them, and how to become socially responsible.
Role-playing is a vital part of childhood play. Children practice what their parents and other grown-ups do, and
since shopping, cooking, baking, and dining in restaurants are a big part of daily life, these are important tasks
and roles for kids to emulate.
As part of this activity, if the teacher, daycare worker or parent are smart, children will also learn about
cleaning up, tidiness and cleanliness! That's why having lots of shelves, baskets and containers in a play kitchen
is important. At the end of the day, all the kitchen toys, pretend food, appliances and accessories get put away.
"A place for everything; and everything in its place," is a good motto for a home, a daycare and a pre-school.
When children role-play, the kids kitchen playset helps them to learn what they enjoy. Do they like the idea of
baking, or being the cashier in a grocery store, or organizing the shelves, or decorating the kitchen with
drawings, or serving play food to their little friends? It is when we are young that we start to develop our adult
likes and dislikes, our passions and talents.
I remember when I was ten years old and my sister was two, she got a baby doll for Christmas. She pushed it
aside in favour of her Barbies. I couldn't abide that baby doll not being loved, so, I rescued the dolly and took
it to bed with me that night. I lavished a lot of love on that baby doll even though I was almost too old to be
playing with dolls.
Right from being a toddler, my sister never liked baby dolls and never wanted to play at being a mom. When she
grew up she still didn't want children... and she doesn't have any. I, on the other hand, knew from being very
young that I wanted to be a mom. I have two sons and two grandsons and they are my pride and joy.
We noticed when my first grandson was just a few months old that he would try to push anything that looked like
a button on a toy or any other object, to see if he could make something happen. As he got older, his interest in
anything electronic grew and grew. When he was only a toddler he already loved computers and electronic games and
could use all the various remotes around the house like a pro. He would sit at the computer with a text editor open
and type letters. Before he was two he knew the name of every letter and symbol on the keyboard! His mom put him in
some acting, singing and dancing classes, but he had little interest in those, so she finally gave up. He's going
to be a computer whiz, there's no doubt about it. An actor? Probably not.
With the help of a kids kitchen playset, children are free to develop skills, talents and passions that could
lead them to happy, productive adult lives. Why? Because a kids kitchen playset is a tiny microcosm of real life, a
place to learn cooperative play, sharing and kindness.
