It's ecologically sound since you are recycling carboard boxes, and it invites participation from older kids who can use scissors effectively. Younger kids will remind you when they see a package that they are waiting for that pretend food cardboard cutout! Take carboard food packaging and cut out the image of the food that's on the package. Keep edges rounded! Partial pictures are fine and can often be cut to look complete. But don't worry, kids aren't that fussy! Don't just cut out one picture, though, make another one every time you finish a box of that product (e.g., cereal). (Check both sides of the box, as sometimes there's a picture on both sides!) That way all your kids and their friends can have a bowl of cereal when they sit down at their play kitchen table! The food can be laminated, but that defies the ecological aspect as they're non-recyclable if they're laminated. Instead, just make more cardboard play food to replace old, worn ones. (Daycares and pre-schools will probably have to laminate the carboard pretend food to facilitate a lot of handling.) Store pretend food cutouts in a plastic container to keep your kids kitchen playset tidy. It also helps keep the carboard food from getting wrecked from just lying around.
