Kids Kitchen Playsets: Homemade Play Dough (Salt Dough)
Store in a covered plastic container. It will last for about three months. It gets dry if you leave it out, but it will reconstitute if you add a bit of water and knead it. This is a well-tested recipe that I used in my family daycare for years. The kids can help make it, too. They can measure the flour, salt and cream of tartar, and pour in the water and oil. The recipe isn't all that touchy that a bit of spillage will make a big difference. Kids especially love adding the food colouring... and watching the playdough change colour. Show them how to mix two colours to make a third colour. It's a good recipe for kids of all ages to participate in. This play dough is non-toxic. It's safe for babies, toddlers, kids and dogs (who tend to clean up the floor after a play session!). However, it's not a food, so don't encourage kids to eat it... dogs either! Note: Self-raising flour will cause baked scupltures to expand, so you may not want to use it for salt dough.
